The Galerie des Modes has been called the "most beautiful collection in existence on the fashions of the eighteenth century." Published over a 10-year period, from 1778 to 1787, its plates were elegantly drawn, accurately engraved, and exquisitely hand colored by the most celebrated fashion artists of the era. This monument to costume illustration was reproduced by Emile Lévy in Paris between 1911 and 1914. Here are 64 of the finest plates from the Lévy edition, reproduced faithfully from the originals. In the 1770's, the frock coat became acceptable attire for all but the most formal occasions, and continued to be worn throughout the remainder of the century. This frock coat is designed to fit comfortably over shirt, breeches and waistcoat. It has a small cape (i.e., collar), pockets with pocket flaps, and round cuffs. This original frock coat pattern is fashioned after two extant examples, one in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and another in the Cut of Men's Clothes, by Norah Waugh. Mounted long ago (in the early to mid 19th century) onto colored paper in a scrapbook. The print has been extracted and is offered here as seen. Printed on quality period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age, perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. An appealing, uncommon and interesting image.
