Fashion is synonymous with change yet the iconic showgirl costume--feathers, sparkle and revealing clothes--has remained largely unchanged since the early 20th century. Beginning in the 1800s, a couture of the risque evolved from Paris nightclubs to Las Vegas casinos. The concept of glamour itself was based on what Parisian courtesans and burlesque performers wore. A tall pretty girl with headdress, nude core with spangles, high heels and dramatic makeup became a Gallic symbol and later the trademark of Hollywood musicals. France exported costumes and millinery--as well as whole productions from the Moulin Rouge, the Lido and Folies Bergere --to the U.S. and the world. More recently, cabaret styling has translated into today's day, sport and evening clothes.

Forgotten Designers is a book that features the work of thirty American and international costume designers who designed musicals and revues on Broadway from 1900 to 1930. The book features over three hundred images of these designers' color renderings and sketches.

This book profiles costume designers who worked on Broadway between the 1915-16 and 1985-86 theatre seasons. The more than 1,000 biographies provide information about the designers' backgrounds and preparation. The profiles are followed by a chronological list of credits. Owen's introduction outlines the emergence of the profession. The text is enhanced by 100 illustrations of costumes by prolific and noteworthy designers of the twentieth century. These sketches, many of which have not been previously published, chronicle the history of costume design. The appendixes cover three major awards that have acknowledged the contributions of costume designers, among others, to the Broadway stage--the Tony, Marharam, and Donaldson awards.
