Leon Bakst (1866-1924) besuchte von 1883 bis 1886 die kaiserliche Kunstakademie in St. Petersburg und begann seine Künstlerkarriere als Illustrator für Zeitschriften. Er setzte sein Studium zunächst in Paris an der Académie Julianfort, kehrte aber 1896nach St. Petersburg zurück und erlangte dort vor allem aufgrund seiner Portraits einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad.
