  • One way of creating a theatrical costume is called flat patterning. This is when a costume designer uses a pattern made to the wearer's measurements to cut out and sew together a costume. In many cases flat patterning is the more appropriate method for creating a period costume - skirts, pants, and sleeves, for example. However, working in two-dimensions often does not translate correctly onto a three-dimensional dress form or person. Often a designer will need to tweak style lines on a garment once they see it worn, or a costume will need a quick adjustment right before going on stage. In those cases, designers need to know how to correctly drape a costume. Draping is also the best way to construct a period costume right from the start. The construction of garments in earlier centuries often constricted movement, especially in the area of the armhole. The very different size and proportions of contemporary people compared to those in previous centuries makes the use of period patterns difficult. A well-draped garment can give the impression of period accuracy while permitting the wearer greater freedom of movement. Having a mock-up pinned to the form in its early stages is quicker... • The Early Stuart Masque: Dance, Costume, and Music studies the complex impact of movements, costumes, words, scenes, music, and special effects in English illusionistic theatre of the Renaissance. Drawing on a massive amount of documentary evidence relating to English productions as well as spectacle in France, Italy, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire, the book elucidates professional ballet, theatre management, and dramatic performance at the early Stuart court. Individual studies take a fresh look at works by Ben Jonson, Samuel Daniel, Thomas Carew, John Milton, William Davenant, and others, showing how court poets collaborated with tailors, designers, technicians, choreographers, and aristocratic as well as professional performers to create a dazzling event. Based on extensive archival research on the households of Queen Anne and Queen Henrietta Maria, special chapters highlight the artistic and financial control of Stuart queens over their masques and pastorals. Many plates and figures from German, Austrian, French, and English archives illustrate accessibly-written introductions to costume conventions, early dance styles, male and female performers, the dramatic symbolism of col... • This is the second volume in a series of books about costumes and settings for historical plays. The series is intended for all those who are involved with a visual view of history, whether as costume designers, scenic designers, property masters, actors or indeed for those who have an interest in and an enthusiasm for period costumes and settings. Here Jack Cassin-Scott presents the Medieval period which he selected as Early Gothic 1200-1350, Late Gothic 1350-1450, and Renaissance 1450-1550 which, collectively, represent the richest period of costume in European history. In dressing plays, museum quality costumes and settings, films and/or television productions, set in such an age, the costumier has an unrivalled opportunity to create magnificent effects and rich displays of pageantry. It is however stressed that the temptation to over-elaborate should be resisted and that atmosphere and effect should be acheived through reducing particular styles to their essentials and showing the contrast of bold colour and shapes, which suggest authenticity to the costumes really worn, rather than pursuing the fantastic or unrealistic. In this easy to follow plan are appropriate styles of cos... [Read More]

  • The increased use of quality designs in 19th-century manufactured goods created a steady demand during that period for collections of decorative patterns. This volume reproduces one such collection ― an extremely rare and valuable portfolio of 376 motifs assembled more than a century ago by two French Jesuit scholars. Relying on historical wall and floor tiles, textile patterns, tapestries, wall hangings, and other designs originating in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and later European and Islamic cultures, Charles Cahier (1807–1882) and Arthur Martin (1802–1856) produced a work of true artistic distinction. Included are a wealth of splendid floral, animal, bird, and geometric patterns, carefully researched and meticulously redrawn for use in a myriad of graphic and artistic projects. Many of the motifs are accompanied by complementary border designs, an often essential accessory. This edition faithfully reproduces the edition published in 1868, titled Suite aux mélanges d'archéologie. It represents an invaluable copyright-free resource embodying the finest designs from historic sources, ready for use by artists, illustrators, craftspeople, and designers working with te...
