  • Sewing Pattern - Women's Italian Renaissance Gowns, c. 1470-1505. provides patterns for 7 gowns & 1 tabard (sizes 8-18). Two have split skirts. underskirts, and stomachers, to fake an underdress. The underskirts and stomachers can be left off, replaced by a real underdress. Four of the gown patterns have sleeves that tie on. The Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries began in politically splintered Italy. The age was humanistic, like the people themselves; the clothing was individualistic, competitive, and even playful. While there were broad similarities, regional variations were the norm. Fashion for woman changed radically after 1460. Evolving from the houpelande (PP26), the bodice was cut separately from the skirt, above the natural waist, and became tight fitting. Skirts could be gathered or pleated or neither. They were often split in front to show the skirt of a sleeveless underdress, which could also show under a V-neck. The chemise (PP90) decorated or not, also often showed at the neck. The sleeves could be slashed to show the chemise sleeve, and were often laced or tied to the bodice, rather than sewn on. This allowed different sets of sleeves to be worn with one gown... [Read More]

  • Sewing Pattern - Men's Elizabethan Garments, c. 1558-1605. The late Tutor period was a time of transition and uncertainty with 3 rulers in 11 years (not to mention Lady Jane Grey, who only ruled for 9 days), and the country endured violent switches from Protestant to Catholic. During the early part of this period the men's styles changed faster than woman's fashions. Gowns (PP53) declined in popularity, and a new emphasis was placed on the lower trunk. Even with the peascod belly doublet and trunk hose, men's styles could not compete with the sheer bulk of the women's gowns during Elizabeth's later reign. Late in the period men wore neck ruffs and later the falling collar, sometimes together. They also wore wrist ruffs and cuffs (PP90 - sized for women). Period Patterns number 58, Men's Elizabethan Garments, c. 1558-1605, supplies patterns for 7 doublets, 5 pairs of Trunkhose, 1 Venetians, 1 slops, a falling collar and cuffs (sizes 34-54). This pattern is complimented by PP43, PP53, PP90, PP92, and PP93. • Sewing Pattern - Tunics, c. 650-1310 A.D. Chest sizes 16-54" included. Tunics were perhaps the first style to spread throughout Europe, worn from Ireland to Russia, Scandinavia to Byzantium to Spain. They were worn by almost everyone, peasant to noble, from Roman times through the 1300's. Many of the same variations are seen again and again, although a few appear to be limited to one sex or the other and woman's tunics or undertunics were always long. Class differences were shown by the fabric and decoration as well as the cut of the tunic. A nobleman at court might wear a long, full tunic of silk with jeweled embroidery, while working in the field, his poorest peasant would wear a short tunic of coarse wool . Men would usually wear hose (PP43 or PP101) with their tunics, but women didn't. In the first half of the 14th century the discovery that one could cut the armholes and sleeve caps curved, thus achieving a better fit, caused some change in the basic style. With this change the tunic continued to be worn, in a more or less modified form for another 200 years, especially among the lower classes. Pattern has 14 tunics for men, woman and children, with most parts being interchang... [Read More]

  • Sewing Pattern - Men'sCotehardies were worn by both sexes of all ages and classes for over 200 years, from England to Bohemia, Norway to Spain. While there were variations, the cut of the cotehardie was the same in Europe. Originally a version of the tunic (PP16), cotehardies differed in sleeve cut, variations, and tailor fit. Woman's were fitted or even tight to the hips, then flared to the hem. They often had long tight sleeves. They would be worn over a chemise (PP90). Men's cotehardies, worn long or short, were initially tight to the hips, with long tight sleeves. They were worn over a shirt (PP43) and hose (PP101), often with hoods. During 1st half of the 14th c. a major change occurred. With the invention of curved sleeve caps. Puffed chests and full sleeves became fashionable on men's cotehardies by 1350. Sleeveless tunics or surcoats were worn by both sexes as early as the 12th c., but with the return of crusaders from the Holy Land the style became wildly popular. The armholes deepened to the waist, then (particularly on woman's surcoats) to the hip, earning the name "sideless surcoats". These worn by women over very tight cotehardies, roused the ire of the church because ... [Read More]

  • Sewing Pattern - Period Patterns number 46, Woman's German Puff-and-Slash, c. 1500-1545 A.D. Woman's styles in early Renaissance Germany developed from the Italian Renaissance styles but like the men's fashions, went far beyond the Italian creations. Cartridge pleating was used extensively at the waist, and guards (trim of a contrasting fabric) became fashionable on the bodice and skirt. The bodice evolved one version with a cut-away front spanned by a bust band of another, elaborately decorated fabric, below which the bodice was laced together over the chemise (PP90) or a plastron. High standing collars became popular. Sleeves were slashed in many different ways, although less wildly than the men's sleeves, and different styles were tied, laced or sewn on. The bust band was also occasionally slashed. The chemise showed under the slashes, and was often elaborately decorated when it showed at the neck. Decoration was rich, and jewels and metallic embroidery were often used. Period Patterns number 46, Woman's German Puff-and-Slash, c. 1500-1545 A.D., includes patterns for 6 gowns and 3 shoulder capes. This pattern is complimented by PP52, PP90, PP92 and PP93.
