O português João Balbode de Maldonado, o João Ramalho, naufragou nas costas do Brasil em 1512, onde hoje é São Vicente. Tinha 19 anos. Recolhido pelos índios guaianases, caiu nas boas graças deles e acabou casando com uma filha do cacique Tibiriçá. Teve 9 filhos com ela. E cerca de mais 50 filhos com muitas outras índias. Esses seus descendentes formam a base da maioria das famílias paulistas “quatrocentonas”, que começaram, assim, com o pé na taba.Ramalho transformou-se num autêntico índio: aprendeu a falar tupi, as técnicas de luta, o uso das armas indígenas e passou a andar completamente nu. Ele fundou Santo André da Borda do Campo, ajudou Martim Afonso de Souza a consolidar São Vicente(1532) e Manuel da Nóbrega a fundar São Paulo de Piratininga (1554).Com suas dezenas de filhos mamelucos, ele formou uma milícia armada de arcabuzes, que foi o primeiro exército brasileiro.
